The Forgotten Lodge on the Moon

One of the most fascinating and unusual facts about Freemasonry involves outer space. Brother Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, the second man to walk on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, carried with him a special deputation from the Grand Lodge of Texas. This authorised him to claim Tranquility Base the site of the lunar landing as being under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Texas!

Buzz Aldrin was a member of Clear Lake Lodge No. 1417 in Texas. The deputation made him a special representative of the Grand Master, and technically, this act created the most distant territorial claim ever made by any Masonic body a “lodge” on the Moon.

Although no physical Masonic lodge was built there (we’re still waiting on the anti-gravity columns), this curious footnote shows the symbolic reach of Masonry extending not just across borders, but beyond the Earth itself.
